What is ITIN Number?
Updated on January 12, 2019 by Sina Bonabi
Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a personal Tax ID number issued by the Internal Revenue Service to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have and are not eligible to get a Social Security number (SSN).
ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status because both resident and nonresident aliens may have a U.S. filing or reporting requirement under the Internal Revenue Code.
If you're a non-U.S. citizen and you do not have an SSN, you need an ITIN to:
File tax return and pay taxes
Open a U.S. bank account (both personal and business) (ITIN is mandatory for opening a U.S. bank account if you don't have an SSN)
